Coccyx pain

Pain in the coccyx area can be very disabling. It is common after injuries like direct falls or sitting for prolong times on hard seats.

Clinically, pain in the coccyx is not dangerous and rarely prevents activities. It can be very painful if you need to sit down for prolong times. The coccyx is not involved in movement, but it does have strong ligament attachments which keeps it in place. If you had a fall, it can displace the coccyx and sometimes it requires a manipulation to be put back in place. More often though, the pain comes from the ligaments without any real displacement. A local ultrasound guided steroid injection can be very effective to ease the pain.

For mild cases, there are specially designed pillows with a whole in the middle that can alleviate the pressure when you sit down.
